I have a kid who needs to decide between 2 teams, one plays 2 divisions higher in a more competitive league.  Both teams have offered a spot however, kid seems to work and blend in better with the lower division team.

While observing both teams I noticed the higher level are just bigger and stronger, which leads to a 50 - 50 chance of him playing or quickly disengaging from the team and session.

While playing for the lower division team, kid remains focused and level of engagement is consistent however, its an easier game with less technically sound kids.

Issue im trying to solve is where to put him for next year as we're coming off a bad experience with current coach.  I fear putting him on the higher division because of how quickly he can become disengaged, at the same time I feel the same for the lower level as he might start to pull ahead of the group as he starts to regain confidence.

Any suggestions are appreciated, age group is U13.

1) Ask the kid which team he prefers to play on. His choice.

2) The coach is nearly as important.  You need to know for sure who will be coaching the kid.  A lot of clubs hold tryouts for teams whose coach is TBD.  That should be a major red flag.  Know the coach. Decide if (s)he is a good fit.

Good points!  I will ask on him on Thursday as that will be the last session before we need to sign a contract, I know we can go beyond that and coaches will still add kids to build their rosters.

From what I have seen so far both coaches are actively engaged in the sessions with good communication and coaching points.  More to be seen this week.
